"Environment is an important theme in a lot of my photographs. Environment is integral to a person’s identity. Environment is the circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is surrounded. It is the basis from which their view of the world is formed as well as things such as dialect or language. Environment sets up a network of pressures, which direct an individual’s actions.
These are qualities, which are intangible yet becomes visible through a person’s outward appearance and the places they inhabit. So, the environment exists before the person, however over time the individual alters his or her environment to the degree that the environment can sometimes stand on its own as a representation or self-portrait of said individual.
I found a vintage dress, which I imagined would suit my friend a friend of mine. We traveled to a boat graveyard on Staten Island to explore an unknown landscape together; all the while Katie wore the dress. This process of exploration became a source of inspiration as well as the catalyst for me to explore the transformative qualities of clothing as a form of environmental pressure. When my friend wore the dress it was as if she transformed into a character from a 19th century fairy tale. She not only looked different from her usual self, but she acted differently as well. She took on the character as if she was performing in a play. It was as if she forgot who she was and became a different person all because of a piece of clothing.
This dress became the environmental pressure, which enabled my friend to transcend her usual self."
Here are the images I am referring to:
